An Interview with Our General Manager: Ian Griebenow

We thought it was time you got to know the lovely team at Homewood Park Hotel in Bath a little better, and what better place to start than with our General Manager, Ian? We have asked Ian a few questions about what he gets up to at the hotel day to day, and what keeps him motivated…

What does a ‘normal’ day consist of for you as a General Manager?

My days consist mostly of overseeing, supporting and quality assessing all areas of the business; from customer service and cleanliness, all the way through to staff welfare. Finally, and most importantly, I act as the face of the hotel where I speak and interact with all of our guests and ensure that we are taking on board comments and criticism and adapting our service to resolve any issues that may arise.

What do you like most about your job?

I love being able to run a hotel “my way”, being able to set and change things to ensure its success. I also love the interaction with the staff and trying to create a happy environment. Plus, the constant changing, adapting and problem solving means no two days are the same, keeping things exciting to say the least!

How did you get into the hospitality industry?

I initially wanted to become either a chef, lawyer or work in IT. I had a friend a number of years older who let me go in and experience a hotel environment and from then I was hooked.

What’s your favourite time of year at the hotel?

I must say my favourite time is Christmas, as it is such a joyful and happy time.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Bath?

I have to say going to watch Bath play rugby at the Rec, it is such an amazing atmosphere and the whole town comes alive. There is a good deal of friendly banter between rival supporters but this always remains good-natured.

What would be the one thing you would recommend for guests to do when staying at the hotel?

There is so much to do from relaxing, to my favourite, which is taking a walk along the surrounding paths and even through the village of Freshford to the river and canal. We are so lucky to be in such a beautiful part of the world, there is so much rural beauty in Bath.

Which is your favourite room in the hotel?

My favourite 2 rooms in the hotel are room 17, one of our Junior Suites, which is the perfect mix of comfort and luxury, and room 2, which is one of our Deluxe Rooms. I just love the quirky wall paper and to me it epitomises the Country House Hotel feel we strive to achieve.

If you could have any treatment in the spa, what would it be?

Being a keen runner, I can highly recommend the Back, Neck & Shoulder – ideal relief after training!

What is your favourite dish on the current menu?

The Chocolate Parfait is my favourite dish as I really do love my chocolate!

What do you love most about Homewood?

Homewood Park has the perfect balance between formal and friendly; allowing people to feel at home but still have the service to match. It is beautiful just coming down the driveway looking at the splendour of the hotel, words can’t justify!
