Freshford Summer Walks
Set in the lovely Avon valley between Bradford on Avon and Bath, Freshford is the ideal base leading to a variety of wonderful walks.
Found bordering the picturesque village of Freshford, our boutique hotel near Bath provides one of the best locations for walking holidays in Somerset.
Here are just a few of our favourite walks in and around Freshford this summer…
This lovely walk will take you to Iford Manor, then along footpaths and along a short section of single track road to Farleigh Hungerford castle. After that, you can follow the footpath alongside the river back to Iford then back to Freshford. This walk should take around 2 – 2.5 hours of walking, although if you fancy a slightly easier walk, you can cut off the Farleigh corner, saving about 1.5 miles.
This leisurely riverside walk in Wiltshire follows two rivers – the Avon and the Frome. The walk is estimated to take 1 hour and you can expect to see the Kennet and Avon canal along the way. The beautiful surroundings make for the perfect quiet riverside stroll. Although quite a leisurely route, please be aware that it is unsuitable for families with children, prams & pushchairs, and wheelchairs.
This lovely little walk links together the churches at Freshford and Limpley with the added bonus of taking in the beautiful River Frome. There is also the opportunity to take a break and maybe grab a drink and a meal at the Inn at Freshford or the Hop Pole at Limpley Stoke.
This walk around Freshford allows you to see traces from centuries past. Follow country lanes, beechwood trails and riverside paths to glimpse the last surviving fragments of the Carthusian priory.
Although the route shown on the map linked to is for Bradford on Avon to Freshford, we would recommend reversing this route and starting from Freshford itself. This lovely valley walk will allow you to take a break at Iford Manor for a spot of tea. The route also highlights just how many different modes of transport are squeezed into this narrow area, with roads, the river, a canal, railway and footpaths, all still busy and bustling today.
